A Tangential Bill Murray Digression
January 06, 2009
I feel like this year was devoid of Top Ten lists, is this true? Or did I just not read them? Either way, good. I didn’t have a Top Ten List and I don’t want to read anyone else’s. So why did I click on the The 10 Best American Movies at the New York Times, by someone named Stanley Fish? A quick glance and I don’t see “Apocalypse Now” or “The Godfather” or “Five Easy Pieces” so this guy’s a wackjob. But yet, “Groundhog Day” makes his list.
“Groundhog Day” is not even Bill Murray’s 5th best movie! (They are, in no particular order, “Lost in Translation,” “Rushmore,” “Stripes,” “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou,” and “Caddyshack.” Wait, add “The Royal Tenenbaums,” “Ghostbusters,” and “Meatballs” to that list! Shit, the first half of “Where the Buffalo Roam” is deserving of a place somewhere. Don’t forget “Kingpin.” And “Broken Flowers.” “Groundhog Day” may be better than “What About Bob?” but I’m not entirely convinced. I’d say the years between the first “Ghostbusters” and up until “Rushmore” were dark days for Bill Murray. That’s 1984 to 1998, a pretty long span that included “Scrooged,” “Mad Dog and Glory,” and “Larger Than Life,” where he co-starred with an elephant. But anyway, I digress.)
This is why I avoid these stupid lists.

“Last week, in the National League divisional playoffs, the Chicago Cubs faced the Los Angeles Dodgers. In Game 1, the Cubs lost 7-3. In Game 2, they lost 10-3 and in Game 3, 3-1. What, as president, would you do to guarantee that this never happens again? Senators, in your answers, please be specific.â€?
- Bill Murray, on last night’s SNL (TNL?)
Murray talked more about the Cubs later on Letterman, amongst other things. The great, always-hilarious, top five favorite person in the world, Bill Murray.
