The Last Word
I have to say, I really like this guy Lawrence O’Donnell, despite the fact that I rarely watch his show.

Monkey’s Out of the Bottle Now
James Franco didn’t impress much at the Oscars this year but who cares, his brilliance in “Pineapple Express” will always be enough for me. And then there’s this great two-part interview with Colbert that I enjoyed (not to mention a previous segment with Frank Jameso).

I Was Not Aware That Ratings = Quality
I really enjoyed this interview. Bret Baier is correct in that some of us Fox-haters never actually watch the channel–I sure don’t. But I’m going to go ahead and trust Jon Stewart on this one, that they have a thing over there and it permeates not only the opinion shows but the “hard news” as well. I wish Stewart would be a little less nice–that goes for all of his interviews–but he does softly skewer Fox, and Baier to a lesser extent, nicely.

Epidemic

Hee hee hee…oh, it’s all just so, so funny. Sigh…
OK, here goes:
No, I don’t blame Sarah Palin for it. She’s just a small part of the problem, and the problem is epidemic. No one should be surprised by any of this, it’s been coming for some time, and judging by the response from the right-wing nutjobs it’s hardly over. Ever since Obama became president there has been a fever in this country. Completely unjustified, but a fever still. An angry white mob suddenly discovered what the former president had left behind and took its wrath to the man just on the job. Didn’t help that he was a Black Man, but no, that had nothing to do with it!
Anyway, this combustible atmosphere gathered 2nd Amendment fanatics for rallies under the Tea Party name, scrawling signs that threatened a less peaceful and more fully-armed response (“We came unarmed…this time!”). But it wasn’t just ordinary folks who took up the battle cries; Sharron Angle, in her failed quest to unseat Harry Reid in Nevada, declared that “people are really looking toward those Second Amendment remedies and saying my goodness what can we do to turn this country around? I’ll tell you the first thing we need to do is take Harry Reid out.”
Palin famously advised her followers: “Don’t Retreat, Instead – RELOAD!” Michelle Bachmann–what, are the Republicans using the women as soft weapons or what?!?–warned of tyranny and revolution if Obama and the Democrats continued to get their way. And all powered to the people through a right-wing media juggernaut, Fox News, and their corresponding talk-radio counterparts.
So this is just the history leading up to the point. We all saw it. None of this is news. But it did not go unnoticed:
The fact that an unstable man could get the weaponry to perform such an act is a separate problem, huge and essential to all of this. But in Arizona it is apparently legal to enter your local saloon armed and loaded and ready for some boozin.’ Makes sense, yeah? But it’s a problem I long ago gave up trying to understand, because I live in America! We love our guns. We need them. And so if this deranged man is able to shoot off 31 shots and then stop to reload (not retreat!), well, what the hell are we supposed to do, deprive him of his 2nd Amendment rights?!?
So no, not surprising. But man, I do worry about our president’s safety, and all of those folks in public service, even more.
UPDATE:
And one more thing: when is the concealed weapon thing going to work? I often hear as an argument, in places where gun laws are stricter, that vigilantes are prevented from stopping such attacks. An armed citizenry could have taken this guy out and prevented more bloodshed! Or, if only the church-goers/students in the library/fast-food patrons would have been packing heat! But this. Never. Happens. Not even in a gun-crazy state like Arizona. Oh, one day…one day it will! But this time it was a 61 year old woman who stopped the killer from further damage. By grabbing his spare ammo. Now that’s courage, you gun-nuts.
Lies and the Lying Liars
A classic case. Did you hear? Obama’s going to India and he’s taking 34 warships and it’s costing $200 million a day? Yep, it’s true, it has to be, it’s on the internet. Rachel Maddow and Anderson Cooper both are on it. But yes, this is how it’s done.
Pinhead
I finally watched that Stewart-O’Reilly vid last night. Good lord, is that guy annoying. Seriously, I don’t know how you do it, loyal Fox viewers. I don’t know how you do it either, liberal watchdogs. There’s just nothing to this guy but fake populism and bad jokes and more fake populism (which Jon nicely calls him out on). Not even entertaining in a “wow, this guy is nuts” kind of way, although I can’t watch Beck either, even though he fits that bill.
But hey, I must not be one of the “folks” O’Reilly likes to talk about. You know, those real people who are getting shafted by the man and barely getting by but somehow scrape together enough dough to buy the latest pap from Bill-O. Authentic Americans!
We could really use a rally for reasonable people right about now.
What I Came Away With
When I woke up Sunday morn and happened upon local Fox News’ airing of the Fox News Sunday program (tv was left on that channel from the Bears game the night before?) I saw a portion of the interview with Glenn Beck. Poor Mike Wallace’s son Chris was interviewing him, and I say “poor Mike Wallace” because look at what he hath spawned…but anyway, Mike’s son asked questions and Beck gave answers that spun around into little balls of nonsensical twine and then shot out again, like when he asked him whether he was losing his eyesight:
Beck goes into some long, incomprehensible word goulash recitation where he says, he realized “I’m not seeing something because I have eyes.” Essentially, at some point a doctor told him he might at some point go blind, and he laughed and said, “My mom told me that when I ran with a stick.”
Um, no, Glenn. Your mom said that if you masturbated too much you would go blind. Get it right. But really, the only thing that really struck me from the “interview” was when Beck said he was one of those guys who boozed it up heavy way back when and then at some point he stopped and replaced that addicts’ thirst the way that so many do, with some kind of extreme religious conversion. Just like our favorite ex-president, perhaps?
It used to be “never trust anyone over 30,” until that stopped being useful, so now my new motto is “never trust an ex-boozehound who filled that void with excessive Jesus.” Seriously!

I can’t say that I watch this show, or any cable news show, with any regularity or really at all, but I’ve certainly seen it. And Rachel Maddow appears to be the most sensible person there is on any of the three mostly terrible networks. This segment, most importantly, kicks ass, and I highly recommend it. If only to put the myth of the Fox News ratings juggernaut into perspective.
UPDATE:
President Obama may want to watch this. Over-reacting to such a small, lunatic segment of America’s right-wing is not going to accomplish much of anything. It really is easy to ignore these folks, I do it all the time. By the way, when I say “President Obama,” what I really mean is “the White House.” I truly don’t believe that Obama himself cares so much about these things but it is obvious that there is a staff mentality that is keeping close watch on these dummies. Why, I have no idea.
Hooray for Us and Our Peace-Lovin’ Religions
Bill Maher does it again. It’s true, what he says. The pope has never threatened my ass for all the shit I give him. All of those silly religions I have ridiculed–”cults” if you will–I haven’t heard a peep from them. Maybe I need a bigger forum? Have they heard what I’ve said? Well, whatever, I approve of Maher’s message.
Don’t Confuse Tyranny with Losing

I don’t know who this dimwit Ken Blackwell is (the other black Republican?), but he is clearly not used to making coherent points. In this case, it happens to be about a book he allegedly wrote (“there are twenty-one points that ‘we’ make”). Ohhh, I don’t want to know what kind of dummy is going to buy this fluff–his book is titled “Blueprint: Obama’s Plan to Subvert the Constitution and Build an Imperial Presidency”–but I have a pretty good idea.
As always, Stewart is way too respectful of Blackwell; he should be ripped to shreds for this trash, but he gets fairly spanked anyway. Goddamn, these guys…I’m always amazed at the stupidity! But then, perhaps I am confusing stupidity with “marketing.”
Here’s another take on it at The Huffington Post. They thought Stewart tore him to shreds. Okay. He certainly handled it well, I just wanted to see blood at some point.
