Speaking of Power Ballads
October 30, 2008
My nemesis, my foe…power ballads. I’ve always been a fan of …And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead, but the last couple of albums have definitely pushed me away a bit. As Pitchfork says:
But if the early chapters of Trail of Dead’s history defied the usual indie-to-major sell-out script, their more recent history has sadly reverted to the usual clichés: First came the dismissal of bassist Neil Busch (the band’s unsung George Harrison/John Entwhistle figure) amid rumors of drug abuse, followed by two increasingly overblown albums (2005’s Worlds Apart and 2006’s So Divided) that steered the band into “November Rain” power-ballad territory and failed to capitalize on Source Tags‘ momentum. And where Trail of Dead shows used to climax with the orgiastic destruction of their equipment, they were starting to take their frustration out on each other.
Yep. Agreed. Good to hear they’re getting it back together, from the sounds of it.
The Anti-Socialist
October 30, 2008
KING: You don’t believe Barack Obama is a socialist, do you?
MCCAIN: No.
Well, that settles it. You may want to tell your crazy base that though. You know, the ones convinced Obama is a Muslim-Socialist-Terrorist! (From Larry King last night)
UPDATE:
Damn. The Obama birth certificate rumor has been debunked as well! All the ammunition is falling to the ground like leaves from a tree, soft and easy. What now, nuts?
Walk the Other Way
October 30, 2008
Nope, I’ve never been a big fan of Aerosmith. Overrated as hell. Now Joe Perry has come out for McCain. So they’ve got that going against ‘em now too. How about cranking out another cheesy power ballad for some shitty soundtrack, guys? Pay day!
One Week To Go
October 30, 2008
It’s weird, it’s like I’ve been waiting for this to happen for so long and now that it is almost finally here I have nothing more to say about it. At least right now I don’t. How much more can be said? I was never here to change anyone’s mind, just to point out the stupid and try to laugh. Or cry. We’re done with that. Eight years of it, and goodbye to all of that. I’ve been writing this thing since right before Gore won, so it’s been a nightmare ever since. But we had fun anyway.
Nope, not goodbye or anything, I’m just trying to figure out what’s next. But it hasn’t happened yet! No party, no celebration, nothing yet. The Cubs didn’t win the World Series, the Phillies did. Better than Tampa Bay, I guess. So the good guys don’t always win, and in fact, it’s rare that they win, but this year for once the good guys are going to have to win. This isn’t baseball. This is Barack Obama. Just finish this and win it, and not just win but win big and leave no doubts. The nuts on the right whine enough as it is, and that’s with their dumb-ass still president; I imagine that will only get worse, but who cares? They’re done.
We’ll have time to write about Bush before he leaves office and sum up the total damage, but he’s already history. This is about Now and the Future and so yes, I fully expect a landslide victory for Obama next Tuesday but I’ll take it anyway it comes. One week left, it looks good. They’re not going to let this get away. Look at that map. It’s time to finish them off.
Orange Crush
October 29, 2008
Here’s the report in pictures from my D-Town correspondent, Denver Jim, from the 100,000 strong rally on Sunday.
A beautiful day in Colorado, as usual. Obama is up around 8 or 9 as of today in this great state.
Bush won here in both 2000 and 2004, but like many other “red” states this year, Colorado appears ready for change.
Chickens Ready to Hatch

One more week, can you stand it? I sent in my application for the Grant Park party but it appears that I did not make the list. Sold out, or so it seems. That’s fine, I don’t know where I want to be on election night, but I’ll probably be at home, slightly nervous, mostly jubiliant, and finally covered in champagne. That’s my gut feeling right now.

I missed this tonight but SNL did another TNL, and Will Ferrell returned as Bush. It’s an instant classic! Hilarious. “Where’s McRage?” Ha ha ha!
Seeing is Believing
October 24, 2008
The New York Times gives an unsurprising but thorough endorsement of Barack Obama, which reminds me that while I was busy becoming a father, the Chicago Tribune also endorsed Obama. Unbelievable. That says as much about Obama’s strengths as it does about the disastrous state of the Republican party. I mean, the Trib endorsed Bob Dole. Hell, they endorsed George W. Bush in 2004, knowing exactly what he was bringing to the table; that took a blind eye and half a brain.
But now they have broken the mold and endorsed a Democrat for president. We can stop bitching about the conservative, right-wing Trib, I suppose. But then, Obama has a 3-1 margin (127-49) in endorsements so far, so you can see this happening everywhere. This has nothing to do with “liberal bias,” it has to do with not being a dumb-ass. Who would want to have to explain that decision?
I decided to check out what a McCain endorsement would sound like, so I went to the New York Post, who have supposedly gone for McCain, but there was nothing. I searched and looked and searched but could not find any sign of this endorsement. I’m sure they’re proud of it and put a lot of thought into it, but I have no idea where they are hiding it. So, as a second choice I went to the Detroit News, whose top story at 1am, by the way, relates that Obama has a 14 point lead in Michigan:
We readily acknowledge that McCain has run a distressingly ineffective presidential campaign. He has failed to find his voice on the campaign trail, rarely revealing the appealing personal characteristics and refreshing political views that caused us to endorse him in Michigan’s Republican primary in January.
Distressingly ineffective. How, I wonder, do they think McCain would run the country? Sarah Palin, the endorsement continues, “is clearly not prepared for the role she was chosen to play.” Huh. Well, these minor details have certainly not dampened the Detroit News’ enthusiasm! Amazing. This makes me want to read the other 48 endorsements of McCain just to see the creative ways in which he is being recommended. But I won’t. The Detroit News concludes that:
“McCain may lack the inspirational qualities of his opponent, but if this were a blind audition judged solely on the resumes of the two candidates, he would win decisively.”
Ahh. A blind audition. Now I see what it takes to endorse John McCain for president: a profound lack of vision.
The Undecideds
October 22, 2008
I guess there’s still an election to be held. Hard to believe. But I can regain my focus for two weeks. I was watching McCain on Letterman when the water broke, so I missed most of that and everything else that’s happened since. Catching up, slowly. This made me laugh, from David Sedaris, on the strange phenomenon known as The Undecideds:
To put them in perspective, I think of being on an airplane. The flight attendant comes down the aisle with her food cart and, eventually, parks it beside my seat. “Can I interest you in the chicken? she asks. “Or would you prefer the platter of shit with bits of broken glass in it?
To be undecided in this election is to pause for a moment and then ask how the chicken is cooked.
I mean, really, what’s to be confused about?

I promise, this is not the place for baby pictures! Too much adult content, not fit for children! Facebook will serve that purpose, so if you aren’t yet friends with me, go there and find my profile. But yeah, anyway, this is my beautiful baby, born during Happy Hour on Friday October 17, 2008.
Semi-Live Blogging Wino
October 15, 2008
I can’t believe I’m not watching the Cubs in the playoffs instead of this debate. Looks like the Phillies and the Devil Rays right now. Great, another team that’s been around since the late 90’s going to the World Series.
Hey! John McCain is angry! I, on the other hand, am drinking red wine. Gallo Sonoma Reserve Merlot, whatever that means. Whoa! I’ve been watching the debate, and I can’t bring myself to type. A little fire! Nice. Obama explains Ayers. McCain finally got the memo to speak like a right-wing blog. Meanwhile, the two cats clean themselves next to me on the couch. It’s very possible that by the end of the week there will be another creature here to join the cats, namely, a tiny bouncing little baby girl. All hell is going to break loose. It could happen tonight for all we know.
But anyway, back to the debate. Actually, can you believe Tampa Bay has been a franchise since 1998 and has finished last every year but one? And now… The Cubs…I…oh, to hell with it.
McCain keep sniffing real loud, or breathing heavy. What’s the problem, white man? Get him an oxygen mask. Now I’m bored again. Get back to the arguing! Where’s Joe the Plumber? Obama keeps smiling at the goofy shit McCain says. Wait! Joe the Plumber is back! This guy is going to be a national hero after tonight. I just checked Drudge and it looks like McCain has won! 74% to 24% Wow. The debate is half over and the people have spoken!
Alright, here we go with abortion. Fun issue. McCain just said he wouldn’t have a litmus test for appointing judges, but that someone who believes Roe v. Wade is good law would not be someone he would consider. Sounds suspiciously like…a litmus test! McCain’s got a real sneer tonight. He’s all worked up. What’s with this guy? Oh yeah, he’s losing, big.
America’s youth are our future! I like that. I’m one of them! No, not really, but hey, whatever. I’m youthful. Young at heart. Young Americans. David Bowie. What? It’s over already? Final statements, here they come. McCain is stuttering his way through his. “Stewards” has been used twice so far. Alright, now Obama. Weird final handshake between the two, with McCain repeating “good job, good job, good job!”
On PBS David Brooks comes right out and says nope, not good enough. Stephanopolous is talking about McCain’s worst moment, bringing up Ayers. Flip to 5 and I got nothing, just blabber. CBSÂ has a woman who is uncommitted, still. Come on! Alright, who cares, I’m done here for now. Wait, NBC has 6 noodleheads who still don’t know who they’re voting for. They all raised their hands when asked if Palin would cause people to vote against McCain, but they still couldn’t say they were voting for Obama. Idiots.
Romney says nothing, now Hillary Clinton speaks to Brian Williams. Her heart isn’t into it. Maybe she’s destined to be on the Supreme Court. George Will blabs on ABC and you know what? I’m done. I’ve made my decision!
Keeping It To Myself For Now
October 15, 2008
So this could become a tighter race … or snowball into a landslide as big as any in history. I’m now leaning toward the latter but not dumb enough to say so out loud.
This is exactly how I feel. Well, the landslide part, not the tighter race part. But I’m not going to say it out loud just yet. Nope. Not gonna do it.
