Busy Guy, Mostly
November 27, 2007
There are rock and roll shows and this album to finish, trips to D-town and Florida in the next month, Xmas and all that stuff, and events relating to my elaborate and over-the-top wedding plans. The rock and roll shows are the easy part (Thursday at Subterranean!), the album slightly less (it’s close, but I’ll know more after this week), the trips are already paid for, and Xmas is its usual mad self. The sanctity of marriage is a whole other bag of beans.
All this must be why I thought it was a good idea to leave my job and try and find a better one! Ah well, life is an adventure.
Kangaroo Punch
November 26, 2007
Howard is gone in Australia. Congrats to my friends Down Under! He joins Tony Blair in defeat, justifiably, and here we still are in America, waiting for 2008. It should never have taken this long for any of these idiots, for crikey’s sake. Go back in time to February of this year to find my earlier comments on Mr. Howard.
Just saw this: Glenn Greenwald says “Good Riddance to John Howard.” And a kangaroo punch to the head, for good measure!
The Fall Guy
November 21, 2007

From what I hear, winter is right around the corner. So here’s fall, one more time, before it’s gone.
How It Will Be
November 16, 2007
The Booze Cabinet goes on an extended break after today, except for maybe some pix, or breaking news (impeachment!). I may even care about the 2008 Election by the time I get back. Or not. Rex Grossman will no doubt be on a playoff-bound win streak and have the city eating out of his hand. And many many turkeys will die. That is all, for now. Oh yeah, beer picture is right around the corner!
Amazing Journey
November 14, 2007
I watched Amazing Journey: The Story of The Who over the past couple of nights (there are two discs, almost four hours of stuff) and it’s a pretty impressive film. It’s a straightforward bio from the earliest days right up through John Entwistle’s death, and it doesn’t gloss over anything. The story of Cincinnati is told (11 dead), and Keith Moon’s death and Kenny Jones’ inability to fill his shoes, even Pete’s (unfounded) child porn allegations are touched on. Entwistle dying in a Vegas hotel room with hookers and blow, well, that’s in there too.
Pete talks his usual shit, about Roger, about Eric Clapton, even Jimi Hendrix. Always entertaining. An extra of the studio recording of “Real Good-Looking Boy” shows Pete as the slave-driver and everyone in the room defers to him. It’s almost uncomfortable to watch. But he knows what he wants.
With so much material it’s not surprising that it never seems to linger too long on anything, and I guess that’s where I found it lacking. I want to focus on the tragedies, and I can always hear more about Tommy, Quadrophenia and the ill-fated Lifehouse. But that’s me. It’s all there, but the film just didn’t give me enough, although a second viewing may change my mind. There is a lot of stuff in the two discs, don’t get me wrong, I’m just nit-picking.
The Kids Are Alright still kicks its ass, but then, what can possibly top that? The Filth and The Fury and End of the Century come close, but really, there is nothing that can rival the majesty that is TKAA. There is nothing in AJ that comes close to that moment where Pete Townshend leaps across the stage and slides on his knees in slow motion towards the camera; pure beauty! But for Who nuts like me, this is some good shit.
Land of Talk

I was much more enamored with Land of Talk at Schuba’s. Listen to those songs, they’re good shit.
Film School

Halloween at Schuba’s with Film School, as written about previously here.

Photos have overtaken Politics as the leading category on this blog. Music is a strong third. Sadly lacking are Porn, Literature, and Television. How about a little help for Miscellaneous?
Nothing is Inevitable

Just wanted to remind everyone of that. Nothing–no one–is inevitable.
Restrain Your Exuberance
November 13, 2007
Carrie Brownstein on Curb Your Enthusiasm. I share her love for the show, even if I am seasons behind (I have no idea actually, where the current season and my DVD rental season differ), and if it is indeed ending, that would be sad. What a goddamn hilarious work of genius this show is. No wonder it is not on regular TV.
