September 28, 2007

Despite themselves, it appears that the Cubs will back into the playoffs, maybe even tonight. Thanks, Brew Crew! Of course, I expect nothing less than a World Series victory. Raise an Old Style to Lou and the gang, come on, let’s do this!

The Hotel Chevalier

September 28, 2007

I downloaded and watched the free short film “The Hotel Chevalier” by Wes Anderson last night (you can get it on iTunes). It is the prologue to his new film “The Darjeeling Limited,” which is greatly anticipated in this Cabinet of Booze. As for “The Hotel Chevalier,” well, you should watch it. It’s 13 minutes long and features Jason Schwartzman and Natalie Portman (wow). It is not so safe for work, but then, what is? Natalie Portman is . . . ummm . . . wow. There’s just something about Wes Anderson’s films, the look and feel of them, that I love. Here’s a great article/interview with him in New York Magazine.

All of Florida, May You Settle in the Belly of Godzilla

September 27, 2007

Oh yeah, I think this is going to happen. I think the Marlins have been very brave and noble, and when they lose today, they’re going to die with respect. They will be humiliated today, but they’ll have earned everlasting honor for what they’ve done these last two days, and the previous three games. I feel very good about this thing, and I have all year.

At least we will have Bill Murray being funny if the Cubs don’t do this. But goddammit, this is killing me! I mean, come on! This last-place Marlins team is a force! Nine in a row they’ve beaten us? Why won’t they just lie down like good fish? It’s already 3-1 in the 3rd, for kee-rist-sakes! I have tried to remain calm these past few weeks but on the inside it is a swirling, churning mess. And they have to go to Cincy after this? Stock up the Booze Cabinet . . . it could get ugly. What a sick sick, awful place this Miami is, and all of Florida, everyone, scourge of a nation, scum, slime, menace to society . . .

Will you be going to Cincy to follow them?

I’ve never gone to Cincy, and I was trying to keep that record intact, but I may have to go.

UPDATE:

Ugh. Whew!

Go Deep

September 27, 2007

This longtime Rex Grossman supporter cannot, like anyone else, support him anymore, so The Booze Cabinet has to agree with the decision to bench him. But a quick vote here at the office puts Kyle Orton ahead of Brian Griese on the depth chart. Simply, he’s deeper:

Bears reserve quarterback Kyle Orton, a liberal Democrat who drives a Prius and likes what he hears from Ohio congressman Dennis Kucinich . . .

- Chicago Sun-Times

Who knows, maybe Griese is a smart man as well, even liberal, but I don’t expect it from dumb jocks, generally. Let’s get Orton back out there! And quit the conservative play-calling too, come on!

Future First Man

September 27, 2007

President Bill Clinton telling it like it is. Gotta love it when he gets mad. No, I’m still in the Obama camp, but this will be the consolation prize, I suspect. Could be worse. Could be much much worse.

Let The Fools Speak!

September 25, 2007

Conservative nuts are falling over backwards now that the Columbia University debacle has been branded a huge success. This is because when it comes to open debate or free speech, the right-wing prefers to bomb first and ask questions later. Imagine if Saddam Hussein could have come and made a fool of himself too; he could have been ineffective, lacking influence, and alive today.

Also realize that Columbia provided a forum that our own president, Mr. Bush, has failed to give over the course of his failed seven years. This kind of open, honest debate–and in Ahmadinejad’s case, outright ridicule–of a leader has not been allowed in the controlled, carefully selected audiences of the Bush Regime. If anyone needs to be laughed at publicly, it is Mr. Bush. But instead he is surrounded by cheering apologists, the ignorant and oblivious 29 percents.

As Ross Perot would say, now that is just sad.

Note: Charlie Rose gave Mr. Ahmadinejad a forum as well (how dare he?!). I haven’t seen it yet, but you can here.

Another One Bites The Dust

September 25, 2007

If I weren’t already engaged myself, I would be lamenting yet another friend’s marriage, but alas, I am and so I can only offer congrats to Eric and Danielle. My head hurts a little from the unexpected Monday night reception. They are falling all around! A couple of other friends are just married or getting married in faraway places (Italy, Ireland) and I suppose this is what happens when you grow up and get mature, cough, cough, ahem, achooey!

I think this is what normal folk go through in their twenties, when everyone starts getting married and dropping like flies, but then, who’s normal? Maybe we’re the normals and the early wedders are the freaks. Because who in their right mind would want to get hitched before they’re 35 (give or take a few)?

Charlie and Friends

September 24, 2007

It’s not the full interview, but here’s Charlie Rose with Sean Penn and Eddie Vedder. Discussion about the film “Into the Wild” and other fun stuff, like impeaching Mr. Bush.

Prize Beagle Activity Update

September 21, 2007

Lots of Beagle activity to report, starting with two sessions last week followed by two more this week. We dove into our second batch of tunes, laying down two previously recorded songs (“The Greatest of the World” and “Why Don’t You Go?”), one new, as-yet-untitled song, and a cover song to be named later. I also recorded some songs on my four-track with an acoustic guitar in hopes that we could use one of them eventually, to add variety. More on that later.

There weren’t any issues of note in recording these songs, as we knew them pretty well (besides the one new song) and so I would be better served making up stories about “temper tantrums and fisticuffs” (rejected album title!). But alas, there was none of that. The most exciting moment came on the way home Wednesday night, when we were stopped at a light on Chicago and standing right there was the one and the only Ronnie Woo-Woo, complete in his jersey and everything. I yelled out at him and beeped the horn in celebration; the Cubs had pulled another one out that night and held on to their slim lead in the Central.

Last night, however, was the night that we brought together a revised and smaller choir to recreate the “Oh Oh Oh’s” on “Why Don’t You Go? (Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh!).” We weren’t unhappy with our original choir, The Hoyne Street Singers at The Legion of Doom, and would in fact like to say thanks once more for your efforts on that fabled day at the old house, but we decided to re-record the song anyway. It’s too good a song to leave off of our record, and we needed to have some consistency in sound and style with the rest of the songs.

After a post-work dinner and drink(s) at Brehon Pub with my Beyonce, we assembled the choir at Prize Beagle, consisting of ten people or so–The State Street Singers!–and went to work (pictures to come). It helped that almost everyone knew the song already, unlike last time, and so in two easy takes we got what we needed. It sounded awesome! I can’t wait for people to hear it.

After that we kicked out the SSSingers and got back to work, mostly recording my guitar tracks on the new song and the cover. Ah, that beautiful old Vox! Very nice. We also mixed down a track for our appearance on WLUW in October. We will be on the Radio One program Thursday October 4, playing and being interviewed, and so we wanted to bring in a fresh track that no one has heard yet. More details on that as it gets closer.

I spent Tuesday night with MaMjo player Scott Judd’s acoustic guitar, a beautiful and amazing little machine that is already on many of the recordings. I sat down with the four-track and laid down what turned out to be eight songs that I’ve had kicking around and are decidedly non-rock tracks. My intention is to take one of these and have Rick and Eric add whatever to it, some creepy guitar or percussion, maybe some piano, or whatever, and put it on the album. Whether that happens or not is yet to be determined, but I think that I will have to put these songs up somewhere, or record a proper quiet solo record or something, just to get these babies out there.

All this, and there is still the rock opera to consider. Abandoned but not forgotten, the opera haunts me and needs to be done before that crusty old Evel Knievel kicks the bucket. A fictional and highly embellished version of his life, the opera has at least 15 songs swirling around and waiting to be perfected. But first, we must finish this proper album.

Up next:

MaM nears completion! But there are still some vocal tracks and other details to finish in the coming week or two. Or three.

Move On, Get Out, Go Home

September 20, 2007

Wow, they passed a resolution condemning an ad? Please. There was nothing wrong with the ad. It questioned whether General Petraeus was carrying the water for the Bush Administration and their war in Iraq. It’s a legitimate question. The guy has painted a sunny picture of a stormy day in order to help Bush’s case. Petraeus or Betray-Us? Good question.

As for Mr. Bush, he said it was “disgusting”!

“What’s disgusting is that the president has more interest in political attacks than developing an exit strategy to get our troops out of Iraq and end this awful war.

- Eli Pariser, executive director of MoveOn.org

UPDATE:

Obama said he did not vote because: “This amendment was a stunt designed only to score cheap political points while what we should be doing is focusing on the deadly serious challenge we face in Iraq…. By not casting a vote, I registered my protest against this empty politics. I registered my views on the ad itself the day it appeared.”
